Winter - The Garden Route's Best Kept Secret

Posted on Tue May 5, 2026.

Just because the sea is cold, doesn't mean the fun has to stop. Find out what there is to do in the Garden Route during the winter months.

Winter in South Africa’s Garden Route is one of the region’s best-kept secrets. While summer draws the crowds, the quieter, cooler months—from June to August—offer dramatic scenery, excellent wildlife viewing, and a slower, more relaxed pace. If you don’t mind crisp air and the occasional rainy day, winter is actually one of the most rewarding times to explore this stretch between Mossel Bay and Storms River.

One of the biggest highlights of winter along the Garden Route is whale watching. Between June and November, southern right whales migrate to the South African coastline, and you can often spot them from shore. Plettenberg Bay is one of the top viewing spots, with excellent vantage points along the coastline. For a more immersive experience, consider a guided boat tour—seeing these giants up close is something you won’t forget anytime soon.

Nature lovers will find winter ideal for hiking. Cooler temperatures make longer walks far more comfortable, especially in lush forest areas like Tsitsikamma National Park. The famous suspension bridge walk at Storms River Mouth is a must, offering breathtaking ocean views and the thrill of crossing above crashing waves. Trails here range from short strolls to multi-day hikes, catering to all fitness levels.

Closer to the heart of the Garden Route, Wilderness National Park is perfect for a mix of gentle adventure and scenic beauty. Canoeing along the Touw River, followed by a short hike to a hidden waterfall, is a peaceful winter activity. The mist rising off the water in the early morning adds a magical touch you simply don’t get in summer.

If the weather turns rainy, don’t worry—winter is also a great time to explore the region’s indoor and sheltered attractions. The town of Knysna offers charming cafés, art galleries, and boutique shops. The Knysna Heads are particularly dramatic in winter, with waves crashing against the cliffs—perfect for moody photos and scenic drives.

For something a little different, head inland to the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn. These ancient limestone caves provide a fascinating underground adventure, complete with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It’s a great all-weather activity and a hit with both adults and kids.

For those seeking relaxation, winter is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy the region’s cosy side. Think fireplaces, ocean views, and warm drinks. Many accommodations offer off-season rates, making it a great time for a more luxurious stay without the peak-season price tag.

Finally, don’t miss a scenic drive. The stretch between George and Knysna is especially beautiful, with misty mountains, winding roads, and lush greenery enhanced by winter rains. Stop along the way at viewpoints, farm stalls, or quiet beaches—you’ll often have them almost entirely to yourself.

In winter, the Garden Route feels more intimate, more dramatic, and in many ways, more authentic. With fewer crowds, incredible wildlife sightings, and a mix of outdoor and cosy indoor activities, it’s a season that rewards travellers willing to experience something a little different.
